FAQ

1. How to make a perfect fit?

Getting the right fit for your baby is essential to avoid leaking/blowout and keep your little one cozy. Please ensure that you can run a finger easily between the elastics and the baby's thighs. But there should be no gaps. The back elastics should sit flat against the skin. The gap between the diaper and your baby's belly should be no more than 4 fingers width. Make sure the inserts aren't sticking out anywhere and the diaper is adjusted to the correct rise with snaps.

 2. How often to change the baby's cloth diaper?

It is based on a baby's diet and food consumption at a particular age. We recommend changing the cloth diaper every 2-3 hours during the day, or whenever it becomes wet or soiled. As your baby ages, diaper changes gradually decreases. Keeping your baby dry is important for avoiding redness and rashes.

Daytime diaper changing:

  • A newborn baby (0-3 months) on a liquid diet: every 2 hours;
  • Infants to toddlers who are transitioning to solids and drinking less milk: 6-8 times;
  • Toddlers primarily on solid foods and bowel movements have become more predictable: 4 - 6 times.

Nighttime diaper changing:

  • Since babies do sleep longer at night, and we believe no parent wants to wake a sleeping baby, you can change the diapers when they awake or are soiled.

3. How many cloth diapers is a good start?

It depends on the age of your baby and your washing routine. The following recommendations are for you to refer to.

  • Newborns (0-3 months): about 10-12 diapers per day; 20-24 cloth diapers for an every other day wash routine.
  • Infants (3-9 months): about 8-10 diapers a day; 16-20 cloth diapers for an every other day wash routine.
  • Older babies (9-24 months): about 6-8 diapers a day; 12-16 cloth diapers for an every other day wash routine.

If possible, prepare a few more as a backup for those sick and extra poopy days, or in case you can't get them washed and dry in time.

4. When to size up the cloth diapers?

From tiny infants to walk-around toddlers, for Mama Koala one-size cloth diapers, the snap settings should be adjusted as kids grow. You can watch out for the following signs:

  • The fabric around belly is being tugged down and/or gaping at the front
  • Leaking regularly over the top of the diaper
  • The leg openings become tight and there are red marks on the thighs
  • The diaper is sitting too low, almost on the hips
  • The diaper is tight around the waist and difficult to get on
  • The rising snaps keep coming undone

5. How to wash cloth diapers - a step-by-step guide

Prepping: Please wash the cloth diapers and inserts at least once before first use. As for nature fabric inserts, you can wash them a few more times to reach maximum absorbency.

Removing solids: Knock solids from your cloth diaper into the toilet directly. Then rinse away the residue via a spray bottle or a sprayer. (This process is not a must for exclusive breastfeeding babies)

Storing dirty cloth diapers between washes: Instead of washing daily, you can store dirty cloth diapers in a diaper pail or wet bag until laundry day. It's better no longer than 3 days.

Pre-wash: Before the main wash, running a pre-wash cycle on cold will help to rinse out any urine and solid residue from your cloth diapers.

Main wash: Toss your soiled diapers, inserts, reusable wipes, wet bags, etc. into the washing machine to about 70% full so the diapers can move freely. The washing temperature is no higher than 104°F/40°C. Please use a cloth diaper-safe detergent (no additives such as bleach, fabric softeners, pure soap, brighteners, and dyes). Extra rinse is not recommended for hard water.

Drying: hang/line dry or tumble dry on a delicate or low heat setting.
